The research is geared toward finding the best ways to train community volunteers to collect data on underwater seagrasses in waters throughout the state in a program led by Coastal Carolina Riverwatch and the University of North Carolina Wilmington and funded by North Carolina Sea Grant.

The Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership has found that the extent of seagrass meadows in the Albemarle-Pamlico estuary decreased by at least 16,000 acres over a 14-year period, “despite suitable habitat available for expansion.”
