The Multistate Environmental Response Trust is hosting a community meeting Tuesday, July 28 to provide updates to ongoing and upcoming work at the Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp. – Navassa Superfund Site.
Topics to be covered at the meeting include the removal of contaminated soil temporarily staged in an area of operable unit 4, or OU4, of the former wood treatment facility. The pile of contaminated soil is expected to be removed and disposed of in a federally approved landfill by November, according to a release.

During the meeting, which is being held in coordination with the Environmental Protection Agency and N.C. Department of Environmental Quality, officials will also discuss upcoming OU4 cleanup work, the proposed cleanup plan for OU3, updates on the proposed Moze Center land donation and conservation easement, local contracting, and other site updates.
The contaminated soil is being removed because it could potentially impact groundwater. The pile staged in OU4 also contains soil that does not pose a risk of leaching into groundwater. That soil will be consolidated in the on-site former fire protection pond disposal unit. A copy of the staging pile remedial action workplan is available online.
After the EPA finalizes the plan for cleaning up OU3, which is the 32-acre southern marsh, the agency will schedule a public meeting and update the site’s profile page.
