Visitors to Masonboro Island are being reminded to act responsibly this upcoming holiday weekend on the research and dedicated state nature preserve.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office officials are working together to boost public safety resources and public awareness of responsible visitor behavior of the island and surrounding waters.
Supporter Spotlight
The island nestled between Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach is a big draw for visitors throughout the summer, and particularly during the July 4 holiday.
Visitors are urged to carry proper supplies, use reliable transport, practice safety on land and on the water, and take all trash with them when they leave the preserve.
“Masonboro Island Reserve is a vital coastal resource that provides important wildlife habitat, supports research and education and contributes to the health and resilience of North Carolina’s coast,” Division of Coastal Management Director Tancred Miller stated in a release. “As you enjoy Masonboro Island or any of our Coastal Reserve sites this July Fourth, we encourage you to act responsibly, respect wildlife and leave no trace. We’re grateful for our partnership with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, whose support helps ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for the many visitors who explore Masonboro Island Reserve each year. Together, we can help protect these special places for future generations.”
Visitors should not attempt to swim across Masonboro Inlet, limit the impact on natural resources and avoid prohibited activities, including using fireworks.
Those who plan to visit this and the state’s other reserve sites are encouraged to review visitor guidelines and safety information.
