Dare County officials are asking residents, property owners and visitors to help shape safer streets.
County officials are asking for suggestions on locations where crosswalks or other pedestrian crossing improvements are needed as it explores opportunities to apply for funding through the N.C. Department of Transportation’s 2026 Pedestrian Safety Project Call.

The state transportation department’s Pedestrian Safety Project Call supports pedestrian safety improvements in smaller urban and rural communities. Municipalities within the state may also apply for funding for projects within their jurisdictions.
Eligible projects must be on state-maintained roadways within unincorporated areas of the county and may include marked crosswalks, curb ramps, visibility enhancements, traffic control improvements at crossings, pedestrian signal enhancements and improved crossings at unsignalized or midblock locations.
Suggestions may be submitted through an online survey through Aug. 14, which will give Dare County staff sufficient time to review them before the department’s Aug. 28 application deadline.
Feedback submitted to the county will help Dare officials identify and prioritize potential pedestrian safety improvements that address community needs.
