Get a rare glimpse of avian field research in action as the nonprofit Cape Fear Bird Observatory is set to host free public birdbanding demonstrations this month in New Hanover County.
The organization’s monthly painted bunting banding demonstration is from 7-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the flagpole in the park marina at Carolina Beach State Park, 1010 State Park Road. Organizers note that, as with all wildlife research, painted bunting activity is subject to natural variation and cannot be guaranteed.

A free banding demonstration is also slated for 7 to 10 a.m. Sept. 20 at Greenfield Lake in Wilmington.
Attendees are welcome to join at any point during the morning to learn about how the organization studies and processes the birds that call the park home. Painted buntings not included this time, organizers said.
“The public is always welcome to stop by while we are banding, but these advertised events are the best time to visit, with plenty of CFBO folks on hand to answer questions and show you what we do,” the group said in its email newsletter.
Founded in 2020, the Cape Fear Bird Observatory strives to promote conservation of birds and their habitats in North Carolina through research, education, outreach, and community involvement. The organization actively works to better understand the avian communities of the Cape Fear region by monitoring migration, studying regional species, collaborating with environmental groups, and exploring the outdoors with local school children.
This demonstration is organized as a way for people to connect with their city, its parks, and the wildlife that these green spaces support.
