
The contractor placing 2 million cubic yards of sand along Buxton’s oceanfront beaches is bringing in another dredge to help with the nourishment project.
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. headquartered in Houston, Texas, announced that a second dredge, the Amelia Island, is expected to be in Dare County by the end of the week to join the Liberty Island, which has been pumping sand since the Buxton project began July 31. Dare County officials relayed the announcement Tuesday.

With the two dredges operating as planned, officials expect the project will be completed on schedule by Sept. 30 from the Haulover Day Use Area to just south of the Buxton Beach Access.
The Liberty Island left Tuesday for fueling and its annual U.S. Coast Guard inspection in Norfolk, Virginia, and is expected to return to Thursday to resume pumping operations, officials said.
The project is is estimated to take 95 days, depending on weather and ocean conditions.
