The North Carolina Ferry Division has been awarded a multimillion-dollar federal grant that will be used to pay for the replacement of a severely deteriorated bulkhead at the Cherry Branch Ferry Terminal in Craven County.
The $28.2 million grant, funded through the Federal Transit Administration’s Ferry Service for Rural Communities Program, will cover a significant portion of the project’s $35.2 million estimated cost. This will require about $7 million in state funding.

The Ferry Service for Rural Communities Program is one of three federal programs that support ferry systems across the country by providing competitive funding to states to help ensure that essential ferry service remains available in rural communities.
More than 2,700 linear feet of bulkhead will be replaced at the Cherry Branch terminal.
“This investment is about more than replacing aging infrastructure,” Ferry Division Director Jed Dixon stated in a release. “It will help ensure the Cherry Branch-Minnesott Beach route remains safe and reliable for the communities and travelers who depend on it, and prepare it to meet future transportation needs.”
The replacement project design is expected to begin next year.
