Ever dreamed about seeing your art on the back of someone’s car?
Now’s your chance thanks to Battleship North Carolina Memorial. Officials with the iconic ship moored in the Cape Fear River across from downtown Wilmington are calling on current and former North Carolina residents of all ages and abilities to submit original artwork that could inspire the design of a potential state specialty license plate.

Artists, including professionals, students, designers, illustrators and hobbyists, may submit original work that “depicts or interprets” the battleship and her significance as North Carolina’s official World War II memorial.
“Your design should reflect the spirit, history, and meaning of the ship while also being suitable for adaptation into an official North Carolina license plate,” according to a release.
Digital art, illustration, painting, mixed media and other original human-created visual design will be accepted for consideration.
The winning artwork may be selected as the basis for the official custom special license plate design if 500 paid plate pre-orders are made, and pending approval of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles.
Entries must be digitally submitted by PDF or photo through the official contest portal. Artists may submit up to two design entries, $20 per design, or secure five verified license plate pre-orders from family, friends or supporters.
Supporter Spotlight
Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 25. Finalists will be notified by Nov. 30 and the winning design will be announced no later than December of this year.
