North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Reid Wilson has announced his selections to serve in the agency’s leadership roles.
Wilson named four top officials during the Environmental Management Commission meeting Thursday in Raleigh. All are familiar faces in Raleigh.

Sushma Masemore, who was named assistant secretary in 2021, remains in the position.
Among the new or returning officials are John Nicholson, currently chief of staff for Environmental Protection Agency Region 4. He returns to his previous role as DEQ chief deputy secretary, which he held from 2017 until 2022.
Peter Ledford is deputy secretary for policy. Ledford was previously the clean energy director in Gov. Roy Cooper’s office, and before that he was with the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association.
Dan Hirshman, who has been with the North Carolina Department of Justice since 2007, is DEQ’s new general counsel.
