Update 2:30 p.m. Monday: N.C. Department of Transportation will delay working on the Emerald Isle Bridge.
NCDOT decided to delay until Nov. 1 the planned lane closures on the bridge when fewer motorists would be affected. The lane closures were originally scheduled to begin this week. Specifics on the schedule of lane closures will be provided closer to Nov. 1.
The lane closures on the Atlantic Beach Bridge will remain the same.
The state Department of Transportation will close lanes throughout most of the offseason on two Carteret County bridges.
Beginning Monday, the outer two lanes of the Atlantic Beach Bridge that connects Morehead City and Atlantic Beach over the Bogue Sound, will close.
Emerald Isle Bridge closures will begin Wednesday. One of two lanes may be closed 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Contractors will use flaggers at the ends of the work zone to direct traffic.
The lane closures in both Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle will allow contractors to continue rehabilitation work that will extend the lives of both bridges. Drivers should expect lane closures on both bridges to last through March 2021.
Motorists should use caution while crews are working and allow themselves more time than normal to reach their destinations.
