This month’s Science on the Sound Lecture Series will explore how marine energy and environmental monitoring technologies are being used to better understand conditions at coastal oyster farms.
Coastal Studies Institute Research Technician Lindsay Wentzel and Research Assistant Trip Taylor will present “Powering the Oyster Farm: Using Marine Energy to Monitor Coastal Waters” starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Coastal Studies Institute on the East Carolina University Outer Banks Campus in Wanchese. The program is offered at no charge and the public is encouraged to attend. The program will also be livestreamed.

Science on the Sound is a monthly program that features speakers from across the state and highlights research and topics relevant to the coast and northeastern North Carolina.
October’s presentation will focus on an ongoing project to develop a self-powered monitoring system that uses tidal energy to operate sensors and remotely transmit real-time information about the oyster-growing environment. Developed in partnership with North Carolina State University and Herring Shoal Shellfish Co., the system is currently being tested at an oyster farm in Blossie Creek near Oregon Inlet.
Wentzel works at the Coastal Studies Institute in the Oceanography and Marine Hydrokinetic Energy Lab. She is also a doctoral student in East Carolina University’s Integrated Coastal Sciences program.
Taylor also works at the Coastal Studies Institute in the Oceanography and Marine Hydrokinetic Energy Lab. He has more than a decade of experience supporting the North Carolina Renewable Ocean Energy Program.
