North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said the state agency is planning a project to install wildlife crossing structures on U.S. 64 in Dare County to help keep drivers safe and prevent crashes with wild animals, including black bears, white‑tailed deer and the world’s only population of red wolves.
The proposed project that aims to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions and improve habitat connectivity covers 2.5 miles within Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, stretching from east of the East Lake community to west of Robertson Landing Road in Dare County.
