Photographer Jim Snyders had perfect timing in capturing this war cannon’s explosive ball of fire at the 150th anniversary re-enactment of the Civil War at Fort Macon, in Atlantic Beach.
“It was a heavy overcast day and the cannons were going to be fired. How exciting,” Snyders wrote. “I positioned myself at the best vantage point I could find and started calculating what I needed to do in order to capture the true experience of the firing.”
Memorial Day honors those who gave their life in the country’s armed forces. It originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. Learn more about Fort Macon’s historical purpose here.
