Those with private wells in Robeson and nearby counties may be eligible to have their drinking water sources tested for free.
The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s Superfund Research Program has partnered with the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina and Winyah Rivers Alliance to offer testing to qualifying residents as part of a study that aims to reduce and prevent exposure to contaminated well water.

Interested residents of Robeson and nearby counties may fill out the UNC Superfund Research Program survey for possible selection for a free water well test.
The program will provide 200 well test kits and more may become available.
Test kits with detailed sampling instructions will be mailed to those who are deemed eligible. Samples must be retired by mail or dropped off at a central location.
Water well samples will be analyzed for inorganic metal contamination. Test results will be kept confidential and shared with residents individually.
Collective results will be shared at a community meeting to be held at a later date in Robeson County, where researchers will take participants’ questions.
