Piedmont Natural Gas said it will perform routine pipeline maintenance in Newport this week.
The work, which was set to take place near 5871 U.S. 70, was set to begin Monday and continue through April 20, barring any weather events.
The operations will include the use of a flare stack, which is a large vertical pipe, and could produce a loud noise and result in a tall flame being visible to nearby neighborhoods and businesses. People in the area also may notice a whistling sound or the smell of natural gas.
The company, a subsidiary of Duke Energy, said flare stack operation is a controlled process that will be managed and monitored by Piedmont Natural Gas personnel in cooperation with local fire departments.
