NEW BERN — An estimated 41,418 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged Sunday from a manhole into a storm drain that leads to Renny’s Creek, a tributary of the Neuse River.
The overflow at the manhole located at 213 Trappers Trail is the “result of the influent pumps at the wastewater treatment plant becoming completely disabled from excessive debris in the sanitary sewer system,” New Bern officials said Monday.

The city notified the North Carolina Division of Water Resources of the discharge on Sunday and the division is reviewing the matter.
The news release distributed Monday fulfills a state requirement for an owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface water.
