A countrywide independent charity evaluator has given the North Carolina Coastal Federation its highest four-star rating, awarding it an outstanding overall score of 100%.
The Coastal Federation, a nonprofit membership organization that works to protect and restore coastal habitats and water quality, has been designated by Charity Navigator as an official “Give with Confidence” charity, indicating that it uses donations effectively based on Charity Navigator’s criteria, the nonprofit announced this week.

Founded in 1982, the Coastal Federation works to restore oyster reefs, install living shorelines, protect water quality, clean up thousands of pounds of marine debris, and provide coastal education programs and has offices in Ocean, Wanchese and Wrightsville Beach. The Coastal Federation publishes Coastal Review.
“With more than 40 years’ experience protecting and restoring the coast, we know the importance of being good stewards of both the environment and of our donor’s gifts,“ Federation Founder and Executive Director Todd Miller said in a statement. “Over the years, we have earned the trust of our supporters and partners, which has, in turn, helped ensure our continued success.”
Since 2001, Charity Navigator has given millions free access to data, tools and resources to guide philanthropic decision-making.
Under the Charity Navigator’s more detailed rating system launched in 2022, the Coastal Federation scored 100% on accountability and finance for its outstanding financial efficiency, sustainability, and trustworthiness.
The organization also was awarded the top score of 100% to the organization for its commitment to its mission, vision, and goals, and a a score of 93% for its strong commitment to the community and diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, the organization said.

This is the Coastal Federation’s ninth consecutive year with a four-star rating from Charity Navigator. The Federation also earned a 2023 Platinum Seal of Transparency on Candid, formerly Guidestar, the world’s largest source of nonprofit information.
