Piedmont Natural Gas, a Charlotte-based natural gas distributor owned by Duke Energy, has applied for permits to replace about 2 miles of natural gas lines beneath the Cape Fear River, the Wilmington StarNews reported.
The new line is to be installed below the riverbed with a method called horizontal directional drilling from Cedar Hill Road in Navassa in Brunswick County to the Sutton steam plant in New Hanover County. Officials describe the method as having minimal effects on the environment.

The new 10-inch pipe will be installed in a different place than the original 8-inch pipe, which will no longer be in service. The company said it would not remove the original pipe due to unnecessary damage doing so could cause to the surrounding area.
The new pipe is expected to be in service by the end of 2017.
