May 1 is the beginning of sea turtle nesting season for North Carolina’s beaches. In this photo, a baby loggerhead sea turtle makes its way to the ocean for the first time after a next excavation. It is estimated that only 1 sea turtle hatchling in 1,000 survive to maturity, which is approximately 18 years old.
By far the most common nesting species in our state is the loggerhead. Check out this website to see how many sea turtles nests were recorded on your favorite N.C. beach last year!
