An estimated 129,000 gallons of untreated wastewater is believed to have been discharged into the creek, which flows directly into the New River.
Crews “will continue work over next several days to fix the issue,” the release states.
Motorists on Lejeune Boulevard are being asked to slow down and use caution in the area where crews are working.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources was notified Saturday about the discharge “and is reviewing the matter,” according to the release.
