BEAUFORT — A private plane wound up in a ditch near a runway taxiway at Michael J. Smith Field Saturday.
Carteret County Emergency Services, Sheriff’s Office, Beaufort Fire and EMS, and Beaufort Police Department all responded to the scene, said Nick Wilson, a county spokesman.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, the single-engine fixed-wing aircraft crashed into a fence and ended up in a ditch near U.S. Highway 70
An excavator was used to remove the plane, a 2003 Lancair LC42-550FG registered to Jackson Blane of Beaufort.
Beaufort Public Information Officer Rachel Johnson told Coastal Review Monday that no injuries were reported and that the Federal Aviation Administration was investigating the incident.
Michael J. Smith Field is a general aviation airport managed by the Carteret County-Beaufort Airport Authority with three runways, the longest of which is Runway 8-26 at just over 5,000 feet.
