The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded an emergency contract to replace and repair sandbags along N.C. 12 on Ocracoke Island.
The $489,000 contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting of Rocky Mount.

The work set to begin Monday involves replacing approximately 800 sandbags that were damaged or displaced during recent storms and restoring the protective barrier between N.C. 12 and the Atlantic Ocean on the northern end of Ocracoke Island.
Single lane closures will be in effect while the sandbag replacement is taking place.
