KURE BEACH – Town council members voted unanimously Tuesday to formally oppose seismic testing and drilling for oil and gas off the coast, The StarNews of Wilmington reported.
The town becomes the 100th municipality to oppose offshore oil drilling, according to the Washington, D.C.-based environmental group Oceana.

The action comes two years after then-mayor Dean Lambeth signed an oil industry lobbying group-penned letter supporting testing for offshore oil, a move that frustrated many residents. Emilie Swearingen, the current mayor and a vocal drilling opponent, defeated Lambeth in the November 2015 election.
