The Brunswick County town has over the past several years taken steps to preserve, manage and expand its tree canopy, including its creation of a tree canopy assessment, identifying heritage trees within town limits, and planting live oaks throughout the town.
More than 250 new live oaks have been planted within the last two years through the town’s popular adopt-a-tree program for residents.
Tree City USA provides a foundation for community forestry management based on set of core standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation.
In North Carolina, Arbor Day is celebrated on the Friday following March 15.
The celebration is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. in Bill Smith Park, 4410 Fish Factory Road.
