According to the National Park Service, staff from Eastern National, which operates the building’s retail store, spotted smoke and called 911 at around noon Tuesday. Everyone evacuated to safety.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials were evaluating the internal damage to the structure and working with the Nags Head Fire Department to investigate the cause.
The building will remain closed pending completion of the investigation and needed repairs.
The Nags Head Fire Department, upon arriving at the scene, reported seeing smoke coming from the structure’s four chimneys.
“Cape Hatteras National Seashore is grateful for the timely response to this afternoon’s fire by multiple local fire departments,” Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent Dave Hallac said in a statement. “Their efforts minimized damages to this historic structure.”
