Families, teams and individuals have a little over a week to plan how they’re going win the Friends of Jockey’s Ridge sandcastle-building contest.
Set for Saturday, Sept. 14, as part of the nonprofit organization’s Dune Days, the contest for all ages and skill levels is being held at no charge at the end of the boardwalk at Jockey’s Ridge State Park near the dunes.

Dune Days kicks off at 11 a.m. with a board meeting, when hot dogs and snow cones will be available, followed by in-person registration for the contest at 12:30 p.m. Participants can register in advance by emailing info@friendsofjockeysridge.org.
The hourlong sandcastle contest that starts at 1 p.m. Judging is at 2 p.m. Prizes, which will be presented to first, second and third place winners, and rules are listed on the organization’s website.
For those wanting to stretch their legs instead, a park ranger will lead a dune hike, also at 1 p.m.
