The North Carolina Coastal Federation has two events in the works to benefit the coast.
First, the federation is kicking off this year with a cleanup 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 11 in Wanchese as part of its 2020 marine debris removal efforts.

Volunteers can meet for the debris cleanup of the estuarine shoreline and roadsides at the federation’s Wanchese office to check in and pick up supplies. Bring water, a snack and any medications and dress appropriately for the weather for the outdoor cleanup. Sturdy shoes for walking in wet areas are also recommended especially boots. Trash bags, gloves and other cleanup materials will be provided.
Another opportunity to support the Coastal Federation’s efforts is the Feb. 1 Hatteras Island Oyster Roast. Set for 1-4 p.m. outdoors at Oden’s Dock, there will be live music with Blurky’s Quirky Friends and fresh oysters, seafood chowder, corn bread and other refreshments plus a dessert bake sale. There will be a silent auction featuring work by area artisans, a half-day fishing trip and more.
Tickets are $25 in advance online and $30 at the door. Members of the federation will receive a $5 discount. Proceeds will go to the federation’s oyster education and restoration programs and a portion will be donated to area hurricane recovery efforts.
The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau is sponsoring the oyster roast. In the case of extremely bad weather, the event will take place at the Hatteras Village Civic Center.
