WANCHESE — Nancy White, executive director of the University of North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute, was honored last week by the East Carolina University Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Women at ECU with a Women of Distinction Award.
White, along with nine other women at ECU, were selected to represent the theme of “Real Women, Real Change.” The award recognizes the achievements of women at the university every two years and recipients are chosen by a jury based on their contributions to academics, education, research and service.

White is the founding executive director of institute, which is a multi-university research collaboration on Roanoke Island. In 2003, she was selected to establish the institute. Prior to that role, she served as a director at the North Carolina State College of Design.
