An undeveloped park that will include access to two popular waterways in Leland has received a major funding boost to build a public boat dock and boardwalk.
The Brunswick County town has received a $443,108 North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, or PARTF, grant for construction of water access amenities to be included at the planned Sturgeon Creek Park.

The boardwalk will be Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant and guide visitors to a boat dock, reduce foot traffic in fragile areas and safeguard wildlife habitats within the more than 78-acre tract.
The park project builds on goals outlined in the Sturgeon Creek Park Master Plan and will “provide greater access to outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, and wildlife observation,” according to a town release.
Under the grant program, the town is required to contribute half of the total project cost.
Construction on the park is slated to begin early next year, with phase one of the project completed by January 2027.
