The grant program is part of the federal Inflation Reduction Act and provides funds to states, local governments, territories and tribes to develop and implement plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollutants.
North Carolina was awarded $3 million for the planning phase of the grant and, last year, the state developed and submitted a Priority Climate Action Plan. That plan identified the state’s highest priority greenhouse gas reduction measures “and determined the methods for ensuring equitable implementation of these measures for the benefit of all North Carolinians,” according to a DEQ release.
The state is now developing a Comprehensive Climate Action Plan, which is due to the EPA in December. That plan builds upon the Priority Climate Action Plan and aims to update and expand on the state’s existing climate strategies.
