The William B. Umstead Bridge in Dare County, locally known as the Old Manns Harbor Bridge, is set to reopen to traffic before the end of the day Friday.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said Thursday that single-lane closures will be in place 24 hours a day while work continues on the $33 million preservation project for the 70-year-old bridge.

Motorists should expect brief delays on the bridge during the lane closures, which will be continuously controlled by portable traffic signals.
Drivers traveling between Manns Harbor and Roanoke Island can use the Virginia Dare Bridge as an alternate route.
The bridge preservation project is expected to be complete at the end of 2026.
