The National Weather Service has planned a meeting to discuss the latest approaches for keeping the public safe at the beach this summer.
The 2024 Eastern Carolinas Beach Hazards and Rip Currents Integrated Warning Team meeting being offered in person and online is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Thursday, June 27, at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head. A press conference follows at 4 p.m.

Organizers said there will be a diverse group of emergency managers, broadcast media, social and physical scientists, first responders, and other public safety stakeholders from both inland and coastal areas at the meeting to discuss public safety and to collaborate on future strategies.
Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that are prevalent along the East, Gulf, and West coasts of the U.S., as well as along the shores of the Great Lakes, that can be a danger to swimmers, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
