Work will begin soon to improve a busy and flood-prone street that connects Colington Island to Kill Devil Hills in Dare County.
North Carolina Department of Transportation awarded a $20 million contract to the Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh for safety and operational improvements to Colington Road from its intersection with U.S. 158 by the Wright Brothers National Memorial to the road’s end near Island Drive. The project is 4.3 miles long.

The contract includes resurfacing pavement, adding 7-foot-wide paved shoulders between Colington Drive and Bermuda Bay Drive to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians, realigning several substandard curves and adding turn lanes.
There are also plans to raise the grade in flood-prone sections of the road, along with other drainage improvements, to reduce the frequency and severity of flooding.
Under the terms of the contract, work can begin as early as February, with all substantial roadwork to be completed by fall 2023. Final completion of the project is scheduled for spring 2024.
