Photographer Emily Woodward of Beaufort captured this image, “Loggerhead’s First Steps,” Aug. 28 while monitoring sea turtle nests at Masonboro Island Reserve.
“As soon as the hatchling emerged from the nest, it began heading towards the sea. I captured this photo during a split second when it paused on its long journey from the nest to the Atlantic Ocean,” Emily said of her submission.
